Re: Ford V8 or V10?

V10. It just feels good. I bought my 2005 from Quadvan in 2008 with a barn door, V10, tow package and 35k on it. It was like new. I paid $15k for it and then had them convert it. Yes the barn door is hard to find but they somehow have a knack for it. I didn't get the larger gas tank but wish I had. The conversion makes you loose 5 gallons when they cut the tank to fit the transfer case. I've put nearly 30K on it now and had no engine or tranny issues. I love this truck.

Re: Ford V8 or V10?

love my V-10 and would not trade it for a V8 ever..... I have the 5.4L in my everyday driver and have towed 5000 #'s across the country with it and it was struggling the entire time. I would much rather be over powered than underpowered any day of the week. Even my V-10 has had to go into the slow lane up serious grades so I can keep the RPM's down. The SMB is a 10,000 # rig which is about my daily driver plus trailer that I towed across country and as I said before it struggled most of the trip. Add a head wind in there and forget it..... I did the across country trip 4 times with the trailer and I am actually surprised my 5.4L transmission held up..... although it did just develop an internal leak between the transfer case and tranny which was causing it to slip some.

I would even venture to say the V-10 gets better gas mileage than a V-8 due to running in the lower RPM range on the freeway and not having to use as much power to get to speed. Hands down....get the V-10!

Roonie- you can't not use an engine to it's potential by "keeping RPM's down" and at the same time infer that it is somehow barely doing the job. The 2 valve 5.4 makes 350# of torque @ 2500 RPM and 255 HP @ 4500 RPM, the 2 valve 6.8 makes 420# of torque @ 3250 RPM and 305 HP @ 4250 RPM. Keeping the 5.4 below 2500 RPM or the 6.8 below 3250 RPM on a hard pull is not using the engine to it's potential. Gear down and let them rev. They are both very able motors. Low RPM crusing is fine loafing down the Interstate, not when you are climbing or pulling hard.

Usually do this on hot days with full load and AC going up steep grades. When I see my transmission temps climbing I like to keep the RPM's down. Also in general the lower the RPM's usually the better gas mileage I get...

My 5.4 really has to work to get up a steep hill when I have weight and the RPM's really climb fast. Even with high RPM's the speed starts to drop. The V-10 on the other hand doesn't do this. The RPM's might start to climb but there is still plenty of power to make the speed.

Re: Ford V8 or V10?

I recently spoke with a mechanic who told me that the V10 is essentially the same engine as the V8, only with 2 additional cylinders so one would expect that the reliability should be fairly similar.

Might therefore go with the Quadvan 4x4 conversion as opposed to the Quigley as it looks like they can accommodate your preferences better.

Re: Ford V8 or V10?

The transmission that comes with the V10 is so superior to the one that comes with the V8, I'd have to go with the V10.

That is correct. We're waiting on a 2012 due to arrive in Sept. and had to go E350/V-10 to take the 4WD path, although we probably would have ended up there anyway since I agree w/the above comments. The mileage hit hurts but the power is always there for you.

Re: Ford V8 or V10?

With a higher vehicle weight, the 5.4 is going to work a lot harder and have a shorter lifespan. The V10 or PSD will last longer because it is working a lot less. I would never consider the V8... it might be ok in an empty cargo van but I think you're asking too much on a conversion van.

So, good news you got the V10.
